Violet Says What???

Posted: October 17, 2011 in Bands, Shows/Events

I make plans to see Mambo Sauce whenever they come to NoVA and their show at Fat Tuesdays this weekend was no exception. While Mambo Sauce was as amazing as ever, the standout performance of the night was Violet Says 5. My band had a chance to play with these guys a few years ago but I don’t remember their show being anything like the set I saw this Saturday. It was tight, full of energy and the songs were catchy as hell.

The sound feels fresh but familiar. There’s some Frusciante-esque guitar and enough funk for any Chili Peppers fan but the vocals really help set it apart. The lead tends to be more R&B than the straining-ramble of Keidis. The production of the material is also quite strong. It’s lean and never feels overblown or gratuitous. I don’t know enough about the band to give you a recommendation on their best record but I logged about 2hrs on MySpace, YouTube and their website and would recommend downloading “Lo High” ASAP.

It’s rare I hear a band and can’t imagine why they aren’t famous yet. Juniper Lane are one of those bands. I’ve been hearing about them for years but I’m embarrassed to say that I’m just getting around to listening. While “Wake From Yourself” (released 2008) is packed with moments reminiscent of Radiohead, The Cure, and Coldplay, it’s a very unique and well written record. The songs are powerful, intimate, emotional, and delicate all at the same time. On top of that, the production is exquisite and the mix is perfect.

While I’m late to the party on “Wake From Yourself,” the band have a brand new CD on the way. They will debut “Standing on the White Line” at their CD release party at IOTA on October 8. I’ll be there to get my copy!

Next Show: October 8th @ IOTA / Arlington, VA

The band is finishing the final mix of their next single and preparing to shoot the video. The video release party will take place at Tortoise and Hare in Arlington, VA on October 15th. So, just what do “Red Gloves” have to do with a video release party? Well, you’ll have to see the video! Also, if you wear Red Gloves to the show, you’ll receive a FREE download of their new single. The red gloves can be of any style… mittens, dress gloves, latex, boxing gloves, socks, etc. Be creative!

Burn The Ballroom Needs You!

Burn The Ballroom have written their first full-length LP but they need some financial help for an official release. The goal is to raise $2,000 for recording, producing, mixing/mastering, pressing, marketing, promoting, and distribution. They have released demos to Facebook and iTunes and have gotten a phenomenal response. A full production would certainly be a boost for the band. If you’d like to help them out, go to their FB page for more info
